Why Kinky Boots is The Broadway Show to Watch

**Tickets were given in exchange for review. All opinions are my own**

The last broadway musical I went to was sometime in the 90’s when Beauty and the Beast was front and center, on all the billboards in Times Square. I remember going with my parents– the atmosphere, the actors, the design, the singing, the story– everything was just straight out of a dream, but it was so long ago I had forgotten all of it. I was beyond thrilled when I got invited to go see Kinky Boots The Musical. Why was I thrilled? Because baby, I’m going back to broadway! To watch of coarse. I had absolutely no idea what Kinky Boots was about so I Youtube’d it, because well– Youtube is my life. I saw that it had to do with shoes– boots in particular and perhaps drag-queens? But that was all. I went with my girlfriend Daniela of Once Upon A Vow and we had no expectations whatsoever.

The story is based off a true-story, which I always love. It’s about a man named Charlie who owns a shoe business after the passing of his father and is in a rut until he meets the oh-so fabulous Lola. Lola was quite a character and switches up his whole shoe business mentality. Now, I said I thought it could possibly be about drag-queens or something along those lines, well Lola is a cross-dresser; A fabulous one played by Todrick Hall who is a pillar of the Youtube community! I couldn’t believe I was seeing the Todrick Hall. Playing a man or a woman he put on an amazing performance. Even the singing which I knew he could already do, but to see it LIVE? It was a treat and definitely made my year complete. A fan-girl moment for sure, next it’s actually collaborating with him 🙂

Anyways, back to regular programming–

The whole cross-dressing thing- if it’s something you’re not used to or accepting of, it could definitely take a bit to accustom yourself to. Now, I grew up in a old-school “Catholic” home where my parents and those back in the days didn’t know what cross-dressing was so seeing something like this can definitely leave you in a bit of a shock. Even for me at times I was like “whoa,” because even though I accept it and don’t care what anyone does, it’s still not an everyday occurrence. The show had me in tears three times. The story starts off with Lola who was born a boy and struggled with his father not loving him for who he really was. Throughout the story Lola deals with people not accepting her and it has to be the hardest thing to watch. It broke my heart because this is what many people deal with– wanting to be who they truly are and not being accepted. As said in the show; “If we change our minds we can change the world.” Accept the change and make the world a better place.

You know sometimes you go into something with high-expectations and leave disappointed, well with no expectations we were surprisingly delighted and thankful we didn’t miss the show. The music was cleverly composed and written by Cyndi Lauper. The costumes were HUGE and glamorous making me want to shop their closet and the actors bought awe-dropping performances with every step and word they took. This is a broadway show definitely in it’s right time– it was an unexpectedly touching story about friendship, acceptance, and love while simultaneously being a dazzling party with some serious drag queen eye candy.
