This past weekend my family just sat around wondering what we were going to do this Memorial Day weekend; we had no plans or trips scheduled. Boredom struck and then my boyfriend suggested why not go to Fort Totten. I had no idea what it was and all he knew was that it was a place built during the Civil War. He loves history and I was intrigued so off we went!
Fort Totten to me was like a Governor’s Island– a lot of history. Fort Totten is located in Bayside, NY, is a former U.S. Army base that is now a public park. The almost 60-acre facility is also home to training grounds for the FDNY and the NYPD. The U.S. Army Reserve continues to work there as well. While walking the grounds we saw all of their vechiles which was pretty neat. A lot of the house were preserved well, while others were run down and creepy. The fort was never completed. Due to advances in artillery, the fort’s granite walls were deemed too vulnerable to bombardment. For more information check out- About.com
